Why Mexico
What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.
Mexico offers settled marriage law, deep coworking supply and a temporary residence that fits remote work. We researched the consulate income test, the home-based tax trigger and the safety data.
Temporary residence, not a nomad visa
There is no dedicated nomad visa. The Temporary Resident Visa covers stays of more than 180 days and up to four years, and each consulate sets its own income test, such as US$4,510 to US$4,792 a month.
Strong law, uneven enforcement
Article 1 of the Constitution bans sexual-orientation discrimination, and marriage holds nationwide. Letra S counted at least 60 killings of LGBT+ people in 2025, and gender recognition is handled state by state.
A deep community hub in Mexico City
Zona Rosa/Juárez anchors LGBTQ+ life, with Roma Norte and Condesa nearby, and newcomers find it through public spaces. Mobile speeds run approximately 30 Mbps or lower, so plan two connections.
The honest picture
Strengths and considerations — both researched.
Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.
Where Mexico is strong
- Same-sex marriage in all 32 federal entities; a constitutional ban on orientation bias
- ART stated universal and free regardless of social-security affiliation
- Fixed broadband medians of 104.25 Mbps down and 88.20 Mbps up, first quarter of 2026
- Local business hours of about 09:00–18:00 fit US daytime work
What to weigh carefully
- Public care is not automatic; plan on private insurance or paying directly
- Non-resident ART enrollment varies by facility; arrive with a documented supply
- A Mexican home generally makes you tax-resident on worldwide income, with no nomad rate
- High crime baseline: 28.5% of households had a crime victim in 2025
