Why Costa Rica
What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.
Costa Rica offers a stay written for remote workers and a territorial tax system that spares qualifying foreign income. We researched what the stay grants, and what it does not.
A remote-worker stay with tax relief
Law No. 10008 asks for US$3,000 a month, or US$4,000 with dependents, for up to one year with one extension. Qualifying foreign income is exempt from Costa Rican tax. It is a nonresident stay, not residence.
Marriage equality, gaps below it
Same-sex marriage has been legal since 26 May 2020, and Law No. 10175 treats hate-motivated killing as qualified homicide. No single anti-discrimination statute exists, and a trans-protections bill failed in April 2025.
Fast medians around San José
National medians of 223.25 Mbps fixed and 137.84 Mbps mobile, and the country's clearest LGBTQ+ community in central San José. Uptime is undocumented, so verify each building and keep a mobile backup.
The honest picture
Strengths and considerations — both researched.
Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.
Where Costa Rica is strong
- Same-sex marriage since 26 May 2020, with equal adoption eligibility
- Qualifying foreign-source remote income is exempt from Costa Rican income tax
- No HIV test or disclosure in the digital nomad application
- Fixed medians of 223.25 Mbps down and 176.92 Mbps up, August 2026
What to weigh carefully
- The nomad stay does not enroll you in the CCSS; arrive with private insurance
- Free public ART follows CCSS enrollment, not arrival; carry your full supply
- A bill widening trans protections, No. 23.809, was rejected in April 2025
- Renewal needs at least 80 days in the country; no automatic path to residence
