Why Colombia
What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.
Colombia offers a purpose-built nomad visa and strong LGBTQ+ law, on a clock that tracks US Eastern hours. We researched how the visa works, and how far daily safety lags the law.
A nomad visa that runs two years
The Visa V Nómadas Digitales covers remote work for foreign companies on 3 SMLMV a month, COP 5,252,715 (~US$1,563) for 2026. It allows no pay from Colombian clients and does not build toward permanent residence.
Strong law, uneven safety
Same-sex marriage since 2016, and Law 1482 of 2011 makes orientation and gender-identity discrimination a crime. Colombia Diversa documented 159 LGBTQ+ homicides in 2023, and the State Department rates the country Level 3.
Bogotá, with Chapinero at the center
Chapinero holds the capital's nightlife, community services and Pride activity, open to newcomers through public events. No Bogotá fixed-broadband median is established, so verify fiber in your building.
The honest picture
Strengths and considerations — both researched.
Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.
Where Colombia is strong
- Same-sex marriage since 2016, with joint adoption open to same-sex couples
- Nomad visa for up to two years at 3 SMLMV, about US$1,563 a month for 2026
- Decree 1543 of 1997 prohibits mandatory HIV testing for entry or residence
- UTC−5 all year, so a US Eastern schedule overlaps most of the local workday
What to weigh carefully
- State Department advisory of 31 March 2026: Level 3, Reconsider Travel
- Over 183 days in any 365-day period makes you tax-resident, at rates up to 39%
- Public ART dispensing for visitors and visa holders is not established
- No Bogotá fixed-broadband median or uptime baseline is established
