Why Italy

What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.

Italy offers a dedicated visa for remote workers and established LGBTQ+ hubs in Rome and Milan. We researched what the visa asks, and where legal protection runs thin.

A visa with two remote tracks

Self-employed nomads and remote employees both qualify, with at least six months of remote work and €24,789 a year in lawful income. Some consulates publish higher figures. The permit lasts up to one year, renewable.

Civil unions, not marriage

Law No. 76/2016 gives civil unions many marriage-like effects, and foreign marriages are treated as civil unions. Joint adoption is closed, and no hate-crime provision covers orientation or gender identity.

Rome connects; Milan adds a scene

Rome posts 170.13 Mbps fixed and 140.63 Mbps mobile medians, with 17 to 24 listed coworking spaces. Milan's Porta Venezia holds the more visible scene. Fiber is address-specific, so check the exact apartment.

The honest picture

Strengths and considerations — both researched.

Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.

Where Italy is strong

  • A dedicated visa for remote workers, whose employer may be abroad or in Italy
  • Civil unions since 2016, with many marriage-like effects
  • No known HIV-specific entry, stay or residence restriction
  • Homicide runs roughly 0.5–0.6 per 100,000; theft is the real risk

What to weigh carefully

  • No same-sex marriage, and joint adoption is not open to same-sex couples
  • No hate-crime provision covers orientation or gender identity; bias violence is rising
  • Meeting one Article 2 test for 183 days brings worldwide income into Italian tax
  • Routine public ART depends on SSN registration; visa holders are not guaranteed it
