Why France

What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.

France offers strong legal protections and a deep Paris base, but no visa written for remote workers. We researched which route can fit your work, and what it takes to stay.

No nomad visa, one narrow route

Freelancers may fit the VLS-TS marked entrepreneur/profession libérale, showing at least €1,867.02 a month gross. It lasts one year and costs €99. It is not a route for an employee working remotely for a US employer.

Protective law, rising offences

Marriage under Law No. 2013-404, and orientation and gender-identity discrimination is a criminal offence. Police and gendarmerie still recorded about 4,800 anti-LGBTQ+ offences in 2024, a 5% increase.

Paris, with fiber and the Marais

Paris shows roughly 95.4% fiber availability, and the Centre LGBTQI+ at 63 rue Beaubourg opens the Marais to newcomers. No Paris median speed or uptime baseline is established, so check each address.

The honest picture

Strengths and considerations — both researched.

Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.

Where France is strong

  • Same-sex marriage since 17 May 2013; married couples may adopt jointly
  • No known HIV-specific entry, stay or residence restriction
  • National median fixed broadband of 227 Mbps; fiber passes 94.9% of premises
  • Paris Pride in June and the Centre LGBTQI+ agenda are open to newcomers from day one

What to weigh carefully

  • No category was found for remote employees of US firms; freelancers need French work
  • Article 4 B can make you tax-resident before 183 days, taxed on worldwide income
  • Routine subsidized ART generally requires French health coverage
  • Paris caps primary-residence tourist lets at 90 nights a year
