Why Greece
What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.
Greece offers a dedicated nomad visa, recent marriage equality and a low-violence baseline. We researched what the visa requires, and the 183-day tax line that changes the answer.
One route, one income bar
Category Z.1 asks for €3,500 a month net from employers or clients outside Greece, plus 20% for a partner. The visa runs up to 12 months, and a two-year permit can follow. Since 5 February 2026, you apply at a consulate.
New rights, uneven acceptance
Law 5089/2024 opened civil marriage and adoption to same-sex couples, and Law 4443/2016 bars workplace discrimination. Yet in a 2023 survey, 45% of LGBTQI respondents in Greece felt discriminated against.
Athens works if the building does
A 94.29 Mbps national fixed median, 120.53 Mbps on mobile, and community centered on Gazi/Keramikos. Your building decides the connection, so verify the line and keep a mobile hotspot.
The honest picture
Strengths and considerations — both researched.
Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.
Where Greece is strong
- Civil marriage and adoption open to same-sex couples since February 2024
- Nomad visa decisions within 10 days of submission
- No known HIV-specific entry or residence restriction
- Level 1 advisory; petty theft is the main routine risk
What to weigh carefully
- More than 183 days in any 12 months makes you tax-resident from your first day
- Public ART for nomad visa holders is not established; confirm a clinic in writing
- Central Athens has blocked new short-term rental registrations through 2026
- Non-residents can be billed even in public facilities; expect to pay upfront
