Why Germany
What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.
Germany offers strong, still-expanding LGBTQ+ law and a deep Berlin base, but no visa written for remote workers. We researched the self-employment routes, and the remote workers they exclude.
Self-employment, not a nomad visa
Freelancers and founders apply under section 21 of the Residence Act with a viable plan, the means behind it and health insurance; no fixed income figure is published. A remote employee of a US employer has no established route.
Rights advancing, safety slipping
Same-sex marriage since 1 October 2017, and the Self-Determination Act has allowed gender change by declaration since 1 November 2024. Recorded sexual-orientation offenses reached 1,765 in 2024, up about 18%.
Berlin, with a backup line
Berlin holds the densest community in Schöneberg and 197 listed coworking spaces, but its fiber is partial. The national fixed median is 103.69 Mbps, so test your exact address and carry a hotspot.
The honest picture
Strengths and considerations — both researched.
Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.
Where Germany is strong
- Same-sex marriage since 1 October 2017; married couples adopt jointly
- Legal gender change by declaration under the SBGG since 1 November 2024
- No general HIV-specific entry, stay or residence restriction
- Newcomers can join Berlin's Pride, meetups and nightlife without membership
What to weigh carefully
- No route is established for an employee who works only for a US employer
- Over six months of continuous stay presumes residence; top rates reach 45%
- Non-residents get no automatic public HIV care; coverage depends on insurance
- Berlin fiber is partial; the national fixed median is 103.69 Mbps
