About Out & Found
Sourced guides for LGBTQ+ Americans moving abroad.
We built Out & Found because these decisions are too important to leave to guesswork.
These decisions deserve research that is sourced, dated, and honest about what matters to you, whether you're retiring abroad or bringing your work with you.
What we are
Independent relocation intelligence for LGBTQ+ Americans.
Every guide follows the same 16-chapter framework, country by country: from legal recognition to healthcare to what a month really costs. When you compare countries, you compare like against like. Read how we work on the Methodology page.
Retiree Edition
For a long-term move in retirement: pension visas, Social Security and Medicare abroad, healthcare for the long term.
Retiree guides →Digital Nomad Edition
For relocating abroad and bringing your work with you: remote-work visas, US tax and reporting, internet and infrastructure.
Digital Nomad guides →What we don't do
We don't rank countries against each other. We don't take advertising.
There are no "top ten LGBTQ+ countries to move to" lists here. Rankings compress complex decisions into a single answer that may not fit your life.
Every guide presents the country's conditions clearly and lets you decide what those conditions mean for your life.
Where something can't be verified, we say so.
How this works
Individual country guides at $97.
Reader purchases fund the research. No advertising. No affiliate revenue. No consulting engagements that could bias what we publish. If you buy a guide, you're paying for country research, not sponsored placement. See inside a guide.
One country, one edition
Buy the guide for the country and the life you're planning. Each is a complete PDF of 202 to 252 pages.
Re-verified twice a year
Each guide is checked against its official sources for changes to law, visa rules and LGBTQ+ safety conditions.
Corrections in the open
Every correction is logged on our Corrections page, and the corrected edition is free for 12 months.
The co-founders
Christian and Tim.
We've been together since 1989 and married since 2017. In that time, we've learned what many LGBTQ+ couples learn: how to read a room before walking into it. We know the side glances in a doctor's waiting room, the pause at a hotel front desk, the table that somehow takes longer to arrive. We've also known worse. An attack motivated by hate left Christian with a shattered jaw.
We don't share this for sympathy. We share it because the questions in these guides aren't abstract to us, and they aren't abstract to the people who read them. Will we be treated with dignity by a new doctor? Is our marriage recognized? Where is it safe to hold hands? Those are the questions that decide whether a move abroad is a fresh start or a new set of risks.
Christian spent more than twelve years in manufacturing, where every claim needs a measurement behind it. He leads the research and builds every guide. Tim's career is in management and operations. He had the privilege of working with an organization where 97 cents of every dollar went to the care of people living with HIV and AIDS, and that standard of putting people first shapes how we work. As publisher, he has the final say on everything we release.
We're nearing retirement age ourselves, and we haven't moved abroad yet. That's why every guide stands on its sources, not on our story. Our goal is simple: to help you find your place abroad, with the facts you need to decide well.
Written for you, because we are you.
Common questions
Before you buy.
Is this legal or tax advice?
No. The guides are research: what the law says, what it costs and where the gaps are, each with a named source and a date. Before you apply or budget, confirm the current figures with the official sources in Chapter 16, and with a qualified professional where it matters.
What if a law changes after I buy?
Every guide is re-verified twice a year. Corrections are logged on our Corrections page, and if you bought in the last 12 months, the corrected edition is free.
Which edition should I buy?
The Retiree Edition if you're planning a long-term move in retirement; the Digital Nomad Edition if you're relocating and bringing your work with you. Both cover the same 20 countries with the same 16 chapters, each written for its reader.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If a guide isn't right for you, email us within 14 days of purchase and we'll refund you in full, no questions asked. Details are in our Terms of Sale.
