Why Thailand
What draws remote workers here — and holds up to research.
Thailand pairs nationwide marriage equality with a long-stay visa built for remote work and fast Bangkok lines. We researched the DTV's bank-balance test, the 180-day tax trigger and HIV entry rules.
A bank balance, not a salary
The DTV Workcation category runs five years, multiple entry, up to 180 days per entry, against a THB 500,000 balance. Since 31 August 2026 you must show permanent residence where you apply; the DTV leads to no permanent status.
Marriage equal, recognition absent
Same-sex marriage is legal nationwide, including for foreign couples. Thailand has no procedure to change a legal gender marker, and no hate-crime law covers sexual orientation or gender identity.
Bangkok is the natural base
Medians of 321.90 Mbps fixed and 183.28 Mbps mobile, and a community centered on Silom/Patpong that welcomes newcomers. No outage baseline is established, so keep a mobile backup.
The honest picture
Strengths and considerations — both researched.
Honest by policy: every guide gives you both columns, fully sourced.
Where Thailand is strong
- Same-sex marriage nationwide since 23 January 2025 under the Marriage Equality Act
- A five-year, multiple-entry DTV with no published income floor
- Bangkok medians of 321.90 Mbps fixed and 183.28 Mbps mobile, August 2026
- Pride events, film festivals, drag shows and health outreach need no membership
What to weigh carefully
- HIV entry status is conditional; confirm with a Royal Thai Embassy before applying
- You may carry 30 days of ART; plan on self-paid private HIV care beyond that
- 180 days in a calendar year makes you resident, and remitted foreign income is taxable
- Treatment is not ordinarily free, even in an emergency; arrange your own coverage
